West Windsor Township Receives $60,000 Grant
West Windsor, N.J. -- Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh announced today that the township police department has been approved for $60,000.00 as part of the 2008 Homeland Security Grant. The purpose of the grant is to enhance the Explosive Detection Canine Program already in effect within the township police department. The money must be used to purchase an additional explosive detection dog, a vehicle and the associated equipment and supplies. West Windsor has one explosive detective dog named “Eddy” who was funded by a prior year’s homeland security grant.
According to Chief Pica, “The Canine program is an extremely worthwhile program that provides the officers on the street a useful resource when responding to bomb scares, abandoned packages or when officers are assigned to provide security at certain functions or locations.” The dog is trained to detect the scent of explosives and therefore can search buildings and persons with relatively ease.
“Eddy” is currently assigned to Ptl. Thomas Moody on Squad #1. Upon completion of training, the additional dog will be assigned to a patrol officer on Squad #2.
