Mayor Hsueh and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to Hold Press Conference on the Completion of the Grover’s Mill Pond Dredging Project
Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh and Ms. Heather Jensen, Project Manager for the Army Corps of Engineers will hold a press conference concerning the completion of the dredging of the Grovers Mill Pond on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 2:00 PM. The press conference will be held near the pavilion at Van Nest Park.
Mayor Hsueh and Ms. Jensen will discuss the Grovers Mill Pond dredging project goals and objectives and provide an update on the new habitats that have recently been added to the pond and are visible from Clarksville Road and Van Nest Park. In addition, the next steps for the project will be discussed. Demobilization of the dredge equipment and the trailers at the containment area in Community Park is underway.
The dredging and pond restoration project, funded by both local and federal dollars, was designed to restore the pond ecosystem to sustain fish, turtles, and other types of wildlife that need a clean and healthy waterway to survive and thrive.
The dredging and pond restoration project had a number of challenging constraints including a bald eagle restriction (lifted in May) and a fish spawning restriction (lifted in August). The dredging needed to be finished by the end of October due to a turtle hibernation restriction. Mayor Hsueh said, “The windows were tight, but everything moved forward smoothly thanks to the US Army Corps of Engineers and their contractor, Select Transportation, Inc.”
