Hometown Heroes

During the COVID-19 crisis of 2020, many West Windsor public
and private groups came together to help our community.

Today, Mayor Marathe and the Township Council would like to publicly thank:

WEST WINDSOR LITTLE FREE PANTRY
AND SEND HUNGER PACKING

Thank you to Send Hunger Packing WW-P (SHUP WW-P) for collecting food and raising funds to distribute grocery store cards to attempt to make West Windsor a hunger-free community!

Send Hunger Packing WW-P (SHUP WW-P) is a program of the Mercer Street Friends food bank. SHUP WW-P, organized in 2017, raises funds for the Friday afternoon placement of weekend food bags in the backpacks of food insecure WW-P students in grades K-6 during the school year and the recently established first Little Free Pantry in the community. The weekend food bags supplement what children receive on school days through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Before the 2020 pandemic, hundreds of WW-P students met the income eligibility requirements for the NSLP and that number has increased significantly during the pandemic.

In March of 2020, as community members were having issues obtaining food or were quarantined, SHUP WW-P partnered with St. David the King to have a food drive. When that was shuttered, SHUP WW-P collected funds to distribute grocery cards to district families. Additionally, SHUP WW-P supports The Little Free Pantry located at the West Windsor Arts Council parking lot, 952 Alexander Road, West Windsor open 24/7 with no eligibility requirements; the motto is, “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
